King, EzineArticles.com Expert Author">

Every time I share my analogy of tenure to the TV
show Survivor™ faculty colleagues start laughing, nodding and poking
each other like school children. Why do they react this way? Because
the comparison strikes home so squarely and exposes the extreme
pressure, high costs and yes, some, absurd, but necessary, strategies
to successfully navigate the tenure process.

Opening Scene

The camera zooms in on a dark room, quite mysterious, and with wisps of smoke dancing in the air.

The
chanting theme music of the TV show Survivor™ plays in the background
with the drum punctuating the darkness with looming fear, even dread.

Our eyes are drawn to the glowing torches positioned around the campfire and empty benches...

The
music crescendos as the tenured faculty enter (in full academic regalia
of course). They keep their eyes cast downward and walk in solemn
procession. With precision, they take their privileged places at the
"tenure tribal council".

The scene provides a vivid
and quite comical picture, doesn't it? No doubt if you are in higher
education tenure track position, you are chuckling and adding more
details to the scene. Therefore, join me in considering the lessons
that we may learn about the tenure process if we consider its parallels
to this popular reality show.

You will be voted on by the tribal council, but in your case it's the tenure and promotion committee.

You can be voted off the academic island, if you do not "play well with others."

Determine the mores, rules and expectations of the tribe or else you will make fatal errors in public and choices.

Modestly excel beyond the expectations of the tribe or else you will disturb the dead wood.

Have a strategic plan for handling the demands of the tribe, or else you will be run ragged.

Make yourself invaluable to the tribe or else you will be the first to exit.

Build strategic alliances in order to protect you from the attacks which will come.

Watch out for enemy alliances. It is not a matter of if, but when, they will attack.

Blindly trust no one, there are too many hidden agendas to learn in this lifetime.

Document
your achievements to the tribe using the approved code (oral tradition,
tenure box, letter) or else you will not be valued and will be disqualified at the council meeting.

Please note, this article is not intended to
question, nor devalue tenure and promotion. The author highly values
these processes and what they stand for when they are followed with the
best intentions of the academy.
However, this brief parable
does provide insights to help us laugh at the pressure and strain we
all experience in this process. It may also help us consider real, and
tongue-in-cheek, strategies which may help people evaluate their
actions in this difficult organization-wide experience.

I want to
clearly state that I greatly appreciate the hard work of all the tenure
and promotion committees, deans, division chairs, mentors and faculty
who give of their time to make the process work well.

Most of all, I wish all those candidates pursuing tenure and promotion great success!

I
earnestly hope we can all enjoy a good round of laughter as we look at
ourselves from a different perspective. Who knew we were probably stars
of this show?

Please also note, Survivor™ is a copyright series name. AND this article is not endorsed by the Survivor™ TV series.

Written by

If so, a recent survey might make you change your mind. In fact, it may cause you to re-think your entire marketing outreach, especially if you market to women.

The study found that 42 million women in the United States (roughly53% of the 79 million adult women in the United States who use the Internet) participate in social media at least weekly. As they spend more time with social media, women are spending correspondingly less time with traditional media: 39% less on newspapers, 36% less time reading magazines, and 30% less time watching TV.

That’s according to a recent social media survey by BlogHer, the women’s blog network, along with iVillage and Compass Partners.

Of course, the flight from traditional media to social media has been reported before and may not be startlingly new to you. But this particular survey digs much deeper. There are 3 interesting findings that I would like to point out, that are worth spending time considering:

[This article discusses...]

Interesting Finding #1: Social Networks Like Facebook Get the Most Usage

Interesting Finding #2: Blogs Wield the Widest Influence

Interesting Finding #3: Women Look to Blogs for Business, Politics, Cars and Technology

Read the entire survey, which you can download here (PDF), along with the press release. It was released at the end of April 2009, and surveyed 2,821 women in the general U.S. population, 1,008 women from the BlogHer network, and788 women in the iVillage network.

Posted by
TELLC
6-22-0-9

_________________________________________________
For more information about Faculty Coaching services from Transformation Education LLC visit www.TransformationEd.com/mentoring, or email or phone Dr. Kathy King personally Kpking (at) transformationed.com

Faculty Coaching with Transformation Education LLC

Confidential and personal

Professional and exclusive

Getting research and publishing under your control

Technology learning

Instructional Tune Up

Developing your best strategic plan for your professional success, and

Much more

(C) Transformation Education LLC, 2009

Digital Texts Rule!

As fancy as the term "blog" sounds, it's actually
just a website that uses a content management system. While most blog
software is more search engine friendly out of the box than many web
sites, the opportunities for blog optimization are readily available.

Here are 10 tricks that will increase your visibility in search engines and eventually drive more traffic to your blog.

1) Use keywords in your blog post titles - This is a given for SEO. Most blogging software uses the post title as the url so take advantage of it.

Example: "10 SEO Tricks to Attract More Traffic to your Blog - Search Engine Journal
Search Engine Journal is included on every blog post title tag automatically.

2) Optimize your blog categories
- When you create categories for your blog, be sure to use keywords in
the titles. When you post, be sure to default to a general category
that is relevant no matter what the post is about. Choose multiple
categories on each post when appropriate. This will create a
"SEO-friendly" url for each post you make.

3) Syndicate your blog
- Make it easy for people to subscribe to your blog. Sign-up with a
free service like Feedburner and then create a "syndication" area on
your site.

4) Offer RSS to email - Anywhere from 10% to
40% of your blog traffic can come from individuals that prefer to read
blog posts via email. RSS readers and aggregators can be confusing.
Adding email services to your blog isn't. There are several free
services available for this including: FeedBlitz, Squeet, and Zookoda.

5) Ping blog search engines
- This can be configured with blog software such as Movable Type or
WordPress to work automatically. If you're using Blogger.com, then you
can do this manually with Pingomatic.com or Pingoat.com.

6) Make comments on other blogs
- Your name will be linked to the blog url that you enter. Don’t make
comments that offer no value to the blog post. Don't use keywords in
the field for your name, use your name or blog name.

7) Submit your blog directories
- Also submit the blog to regular directories such as (DMOZ, JoeAnt,
GoGuides, Google Blog Search, etc) that have categories for blogs.

8) Targeted advertising
– Now this doesn't really drive traffic to your site but will make you
money. It's possible by using Google AdSense to display highly targeted
ads on your blog. Once you’ve setup an account and placed the ads on
your site, just sit back and watch the cash come in. Cha-ching.

9) Snatch up hot keywords
- Now before you place ads on your blog, be sure your keyword density
is good for the right terms. A VERY helpful tool to improve your
traffic for high-paying keywords is called Keyword Elite
(http://www.seojuice.com).

10) Use track backs - If there
is a blog that you refer to or quote and it is highly relevant to your
subject, leave a track back. It increases your link popularity and may
even score a few interested readers from the linked site. A TrackBack
is a mechanism used in a blog to show, around an entry, a list of other
blogs that refer to it.

Summary

The important thing
to remember is that no matter how many optimization tactics you employ
with a blog, there is no substitute for quality content. Blog
optimization is only as effective as the quality and usefulness of the
content you’re optimizing. So do not limit yourself to tips and lists.
Use your imagination and you will come up with thousands of ways to
drive traffic to your blog!

How do women’s bodies matter in adult literacy and basic education? Our Volume 1 (Empowering Women through Literacy: Views from Experience) focused on empowering women in the classroom and primarily addressed intellectual and personal barriers to and growth for women’s literacy learning.

However, we are aware of the many ways in which women’s bodies and whole selves are integral to the womanhood we celebrate, yet are ignored, or even silenced, in traditional adult ABE, ESOL, and literacy classes. Even when we do recognize or talk about women’s bodies, these discussions generally focus on sexual violence, childcare/parenting, or health. Educators and students seek expression as embodied women, but find these realities difficult to include in current programs and classes.

The editors seek to gather writings about the many dimensions of womanhood, specifically related to em-body-ment, as they are experienced in literacy and basic/developmental educational settings. We encourage a variety of genres including stories, creative writing, poetry, articles, drawings, and research.

We seek writings from…

We desire to receive proposals from literacy educators about the issues they see in their classrooms and/or programs and how they seek to address them. In addition to individual writings, we also want proposals that involve collaborative writings from adult literacy educators and learners on the topics listed below. We also encourage proposals from researchers about their current work in these areas. Original artwork will also be considered.

Writings will generally be considered in 3 categories:

1.     Personal reflection;

2. Strategies for ways to address these issues in programs or classrooms; and,

3. Research written with practical application

Writing in all three areas should be accessible and reflective.
By Dr. Kathleen P. King

Scanning technology adoption trends of the last few years, reveal that schools, teachers, parents and students can all benefit from the low cost options now gaining popularity. This article defines and explores the roots of this trend and describes need-to-know resources for every person looking at purchasing computers or software in 2009 and beyond.
Article Link (click here)

This article demystifies and discuss the terms, trends and power of one laptop per child, open source software and netbooks (those under $500 laptops-- are they worth it?).

Find answers to the following (and more)

What is OLPC and why do I care?

How did these inexpensive laptops all of a sudden emerge?

How do I get FREE complete office software package (clone of Microsoft Office)?

What is open source software and how does it safe me and my school considerable money every year?

What do penguins have to do with this article? (They are central, believe me)

Article Link (click here)

Brookfield, Distinguished University Professor, University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota

“These days it is fashionable to lament the passing of adult education’s transgressive spirit. The historical myth that exercises considerable influence on the field is that adult education used to be a radical expression of the democratic spirit, but it has been tamed, moved to the dark side, become the lapdog of workplace learning, sold its soul to the devil of professionalism in a misguided attempt to be taken seriously by more powerful branches of education. This myth is just that – a myth. I have never believed it. The radical, transgressive spirit of adult education has endured and constantly reconfigured itself, doing its best to escape and outwit those who would contain and neutralize its energy and surfacing in ways that constantly take adult educators by surprise. The colleagues I work with in adult and higher education and the learners I serve and study with are neither tamed nor ideologically hoodwinked. This volume of spirited commitment—defiantly hopeful, seriously playful, and placing matters of desire and resistance at its center—is an apt representation of the enduring radical spirit of the best of adult education.”

Overview
Adult Education in Queer Contexts: Power, Politics, and Pedagogy is divided into 16 chapters beginning with a review of themes, concepts, and ideas pervasive at the Adult Education Research Conference (AERC) and AERC LGBTQ&Allies PreConferences for more than half a decade.

The chapters in this edited text are—like the concept Queer—eclectic, dynamic, flowing, turbulent, enraging, engaging, encompassing, unyielding, unapologetic, and still they provide just a limited purview of all that is Queer in adult education, lifelong learning, culture, and society. Nevertheless, the sum of these chapters provides readers with an intricate and informative pathway to learn about Queer politics, culture, and sociality, and to explore sexual minorities—including lesbian, gay, two-spirit, bisexual, intersexual, transsexual, transgender, and Queer persons—and their issues into the present moment.

Table of Contents:

Queer Silence No More—Let’s Make Some Noise by Robert J.
Throw Time Management Out The Window

by Maria Marsala

Summary: There is no such thing as time management. Heck, but you already know that.

Forget about time management, I have. Why?
Have any of the hours upon hours of training, or reading on the subject solved the time problem?
Heck, none of it worked for very long. Did it work for you?

When I became a student of Coach U www.coachu.com,
in 1997, one of the mandatory courses I had to take, was called "The
Personal Foundation Program®". It's a 24 subject course that includes
thought-provoking exercises, including "Getting Complete", Removing
Tolerations From Your Life, and a host of other personal development
topics.
(Note: Most, if not all, Coach U trained coaches offer this program to
their clients.)

It was then that I realized why all this time management stuff wasn't working! How could I
possibly manage something I have no control over: time? Think about it.
Can you really control time? Yet, haven't we all tried and failed?

What many consider to be time management is really a combination of:

Defining your top 5 values (what you have to have or you'll emotionally die).

Learning about your needs (what's running you).

Setting life priorities (what's really important to you)

Balancing your life, whatever balance means to you. Balance is different for every person.

Clearing out life's clutter: getting complete with the past and uncluttering all your living environments.

Taking your to-do list and making it a to-complete list. Pay
someone to complete the things you don't want to do but they need
doing, remove what you really don't want to finish, let things go that
you have no control over and shorten your list!

Collaborating - stop the process of doing so much of life alone because life's just not meant be that way.

Why do all that work? Because you'll make better decisions, therefore, you'll have more time.
What can you do to shift from trying to manage your time to managing your life?
First determine where your life is not as fulfilled as you'd like it to be
by taking the Life Fulfillment Assessment. Look for places you're leaking energy and other places you could use some energizing.

experiences and the results of their studies with students, other
researchers, and practitioners from around the world.

~~TELLC
5/19/09

New Release: Handbook of Evolving Research of Transformative Learning

How could this be the 10th anniversary edition of my original research book?

This is not possible. But then and look back at the 14 related studies,
numerous other books and research papers published and the many
students I have mentored into the adult learning and HR training field
since 1998 AND I guess it really is 10 years...

No one is more amazed than I at the impact that research in
transformative learning has evolved over the past ten years. I have
also been in a very opportune position to have seen much of that
research evolve as I have used a specific, but flexible model to frame
my work. AND to my great pleasure and anticipation, many other people
have scaffolded upon and extended this work to new domains and contexts.

This vantage point has provided a rich body of research and ever
evolving perspective. I am privileged to have synthesized and collected
this work into one volume which has just debuted at Information Age Publishing this week.

I want to thank all the people who have provided critical feedback on
my research papers, journal submissions and book manuscripts. I also am
indebted to those researchers and graduate students who have used the
model in different ways, with different research questions, among
different contexts and with fresh eyes and minds.
Thank you for providing a fuller spectrum of understanding.

This handbook has been a very substantial undertaking to bring together
all this work, contact people who have done research and follow up
prior contacts. yet it has been very regarding. I hope that many will
benefit from the in-depth descriptions, assistance and guidance this
book has to offer.

We will continue to press forward in our endeavors, dialogue
extensively and advance this field. My ultimate dream is that everyone
who has the interest will contribute to this broader spectrum of
understanding. As I describe in the book, only through the prism of sharing our different lives and experiences, can we come closer to understanding the multifaceted transformative learning experience and journey.

Adult learners everywhere are waiting for us to bring this theory to
action in their classrooms. Join us in this developing field with this
text providing a foundational research background for many sectors of
education and training.
It has emerged from five years of work by WE LEARN (Women Expanding Literacy Education Action Resource Network) to address the needs of literacy educators and students alike through the organization. The vibrant collective of the WE LEARN network provides consistent visibility for women’s literacy issues, creates connections among educators and activists, supports self efficacy among learners, encourages new research relevant to women in ABE, and develops and distributes women-focused literacy materials and curriculum resources. It continues to be the only national U.S. organization directly addressing issues of adult women's literacy and the educational needs of women in ABE.

For a personal perspective on this volume, we are pleased to announce that Drs.
Miller and King will present an interactive discussion at NYACCE
Annual Conference 2009 on the topic of the book. This professional conference for adult, community, continuing and workforce educators will be held May 3-5, 2009 in Albany NY. For more information visit www.nyacce.org.

We know you will enjoy this volume that provides an opportunity to hear from 47 contributors from around the world who reflect on their experiences with critical topics of adult literacy practices; how to empower women through literacy and current research based practice. From Belize to Australia, Brazil to Germany, and USA to Turkey, the voices of women engaged in empowerment are awaiting you through these pages. Literacy can change lives, how can we better reach those who desire this empowerment? Join us we explore the breadth of vision and knowledge captured within this groundbreaking volume.

This unique volume of writings by educators in the field working with women's literacy reveals the many ways in which addressing women's empowerment through literacy continues to impact lives. Not only are teachers and learners in adult basic education (ABE), literacy and English language learning (ELL) classes affected, but also those who value and support women’s learning and equity, and education for social change.

The Editors: Dr. Mev Miller and Dr. Kathleen P. and openness are a gift. Please keep opening educators' minds to the
