Talking Financial Literacy Podcast and its companion resource site is a resource for educators. If you are seeking to gain information, resources and insights about incorporating teaching and learning about personal finance into a variety of content studies, this is the place to check for current, interesting and top-notch assistance.

Building on the power of new media, whether you are reading the web, checking the web links or listening to the podcast, you will find an abundance of help in this growing community of educators interested in the same pursuit.

Your Talking Financial Literacy Podcast hosts and producers are Mark Gura and Dr. Kathleen P. King.

Themes and Topics

The series investigates and reports on the current state of Financial Literacy Education in our nation’s schools. The reporting is done with an eye toward identifying gaps and insufficiencies and makes recommendations on approaches to remedy these. The series’ website provides links to content resources that listeners may use in better understanding this area and preparing themselves to provide a better learning experience and program for their students.

The series provides content in the following areas which are traditionally associated with personal finance and economics instruction and for which, traditionally, material for use in schools has been produced:

Life Skills (career skills, etc.)
Social Studies (economics)
Mathematics

Furthermore, a significant portion of the podcast series is devoted to interviews of expert and highly knowledgeable professionals in these and other areas of education that may address instruction in Financial Literacy.

In addition to covering traditional dimensions, the series will ask the questions:

What is “Financial Literacy?” Is the answer to this question something of a moving target?
Why MUST ‘Financial Literacy’ literacy as mission critical education be re-defined and re-established for young people NOW?
How has the world, and peoples’ relationship to economics and financial literacy evolved to make this so important?

One way of addressing the above will be to present relevant headlines and news articles.

The series also examines areas of advanced and exemplary activity in Financial Literacy Education, i.e. states that have developed standards specific to it and that have provided content and other resources to with which to implement them.

Discussion Threads

During the course of the 24 episodes a wide variety of topics will be explored, each giving insight into the place, importance, and methods for a facet of Financial Literacy Education. These will include:

Artwork should be sent electronically in graphics file (600 dpi resolution -- .tif, .gif, .bmp, etc -- NOT in .pdf), or mail the original.

Women's Literacy Conference -New York City @ Fordham University's Adult Education & HRD Program: March 7 and 8, 2008

The profound differences that continue to separate women by culture, language, literacy and geography will dominate the discussions at "Building Alliances/Construyendo Alianzas," the fifth annual (Net)working Gathering and Conference on Women and Literacy on March 7 and 8 at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus. Co-sponsored by Women Expanding: Literacy Education Action Research Network (WE LEARN) and Fordham’s Graduate School of Education, this year’s conference will explore the differences that divide women and consider ways of building alliances across those differences.

This community- and education-based conference will include a series of workshops and events focusing on general issues of women's basic/literacy education. An exhibit area will feature a collection of women-centered literacy materials and curriculum resources gathered by WE LEARN as well as the work of authors, publishers and literacy organizations directly related to the field.

Meizhu Lui, co-author of The Color of Wealth: The Story Behind the U.S. Racial Wealth Divide (New Press, 2006), will deliver the keynote address. In addition, several special events are planned to celebrate women’s empowerment through literacy learning.

"We at Fordham are especially honored to host the 2008 WE LEARN Conference," said Kathleen P. King, Ed.D., professor and program co-director of the M.S. in Adult Education and Human Resource Development at the Graduate School of Education. "This is a collaboration and exchange among adult literacy educators and adult literacy students, a celebration of women's empowerment and International Women's Day, and a visible example of what a transformative change adult education can bring about in people's lives."

The new upgrade to Skype 3.6 for Windows will move the resolution of the video image through SKYPE to 640 x 480. This upgrade in video quality is definitely progress for education on top of the reliable SKYPE interface. This combination might be a solid solution for free videoconferencing for matter education-related encounters.

This makes additional resources available for educators and trainers to be able to use not only with their classes, but also peer-to-peer groups and also from site-to-site.

One of the great benefits I ave found with SKYPE is that their software and interface has become easy to install, use and very reliable. All of these make it more likely that we will have a viable possibility for us to use in educational settings that will be probelm-proof most of the time. AND that a mong what has become nearly an industry standard!

I am a firm believer that the technology should be as transparent as possible- that is that we should not have to spend a great deal of time learning how to use it or adjust it.

Not a small matter when it comes to tech resources is the matter of hosting services....

When you are in the process of creating websites you might start off with a one-size-fits all template site like Yahoo, or even use MySpace or FaceBook as your homepage, but eventually we evolve into needing FTP services and other hosting . There are many options available but I have found reliable service for many years and now a substantial breadth of services for very little cost at www.GoDaddy.com

Many people know www.GoDaddy.com as a place to check out the availability of a domain name or even to register their domains. But hoisting services are great deals, especially when you get into their more powerful bundles which are very inexpensive and come jampacked with advanced services.

For instance I download and do my own installs of Wordpress for each of my blogs now on my hosting site. In addition I even have PHPAdmin and MySQL which I have installed and am using for databases.

Other installs are available- well worth the look- I know there are many options, everybody has their favorites. This year mine is GoDaddy Let me know what you think. I know people find the tech support very reliable as well- they have been very responsive with me on this account- a pretty critical one, right?

One Laptop Per Child - $100 Laptop- Will the XO Continue to Change the World?

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative started by Dr. Negroponte from MIT is living up to it's early hopes of being the catalyst for change. While the New units are now called XO and cost about $175 (still a terrific feat) to produce, they will be shipped to numerous countries over the coming months.

Aside from the great impact the broad, free distribution of wireless laptops to underserved youngsters around the world will have on their education, information skills, world view and family literacy skills there have already been dramatic results from this project across the manufacturing industry!

This electricity miser of a laptop uses tiny amounts of power (.8 watts ) compared to our usual units; can create local area communication networks aka in OLPC lingo a "wireless mesh;" sports a powerful screen that is visible indoors and outside; and numerous powerful programs for learning and productivity on the Linux OS called Sugar.

We have seen computer producers creating competitive unites - hurrah! Let's drive the price down on laptops that people of all economic means can have access to. We expect that the current great interest and investment drive in finding green solutions will stir great interest in the XO aka OLPC project. Furthermore this project has done a great deal to push the merits of open source software to the forefront of awareness and validation for the general public. All great developments that give cause for me to say this OLPC project is already chasing the world for the better. Let's hope it reaches the young people of the world and their families as soon as possible.

At Podcast for Teachers (www.podcastforteachers.org) we have been charting the development of this project for over a year. It is exciting to see that ingenuity and goodwill can drive some changes in industry that will have benefits for all.

Educational Podcast Breaks the 100th Barrier!

The popular weekly professional development podcast, Podcast for Teachers, Techpod (SM) of Fordham University released their 100th episode on August 13, 2007. The technological and educational milestone event was marked by the cohosts celebrating Teachers and 21st Century Skills in their episode while they briefly reflected on the evolution and achievements of the podcast since its start in late August 2005. Adding to the information-packed episode, the 100th celebration featured topics which illustrate the tenacity of the team to tackle topics which need addressing in education from policy to curriculum and tech. In this episode alone topics included, No Child Left Behind (NCLB, Revised ISTE NETS standards, wikis in curriculum, YouTube, wiki and blogging tips, and much more.

Proof of the fun that education can be even when you are covering substantial ground there is evidence in the episode that the ed tech experts and author cohosts, Mark Gura and Dr. Kathleen King, were joined for the celebration with at least one marching band, fire works and the Podcast for Teachers mascots.

Greeting listeners weekly with "Live from the Bronx!," Podcast for Teachers, Techpod (SM) has reached over 3.02 million listeners since 8/28/2005 through not only its weekly podcast, but also it's rich educational resources at it's companion website www.podcastforteachers.org.

King and Gura have also published a book named Podcasting for Teachers which provides substantial additional insight into podcasting and its curricular uses in education. Many readers have commented on its great value for guiding in the development and advancement of in k-12, higher education and corporate settings. The book is published by and available through Information Age Publishing.

Podcast for Teachers, Techpod (SM) was originally started by Dr. Kathleen King and Mark Gura as a project at Fordham University's RETC Center for Professional Development ( www.retc.fordham.edu). Virtual Podcamp Breaks Down Barriers

It was quite a great experience to participate in Podcamp City Online in July 2007.
While I have been part of and presented in virtual conferences before, this was truly a different "flavor" of an undertaking as it was a much more wide-open community for people to attend with no registration fee. At the same time the sessions were of good quality and the conference organizers did a great job of coordinating the schedule, and the technology.

Podcamp City Online broke down the customary face to face barriers of travel and space by being held online, but it also overcame issues of equity and access. With free registration, an opportunity for anyone to submit the presentation topics and sessions, AND online synchronous technologies that are very user friendly, this effort continuous to bring virtual learning opportunities virtual communities to more people.

Podcamp City Online was a HUGE success!

I have to say that the first online podcamp was a huge success and I am glad to have been a co-organizer of it. Co-Organizer Ava from AvaHosting.Biz and I worked very hard the week before training speakers, setting up the room, and implementing our final marketing strategies.

We had over 100 people come into the room the entire day with the room peaking at 40 people in the afternoon.

We had over 11 speakers including myself on topics from Dr. Kathleen P. King's Podcasting on a Budget for Everyone to John Ciampa's Web 2.0 & A Look At How To Be Successful By using Emerging Trends to Create Wealth Online All While Loving What You Do to Ralph Mucci's How to get noticed with your Podcast to Radio DJ Lisa Tolliver's The Power of Podcasting. The last speaker Fred G.Castaneda, had the most powerful session of all titled How to Avoid Burnout & Prevent Podfading.

My two sessions were How To Upgrade Your Podcast to a Podcast Network and The Power of the RSS Feed and using it to get more subscribers.

The evening ended with the traditional live entertainment that most podcamps have. Yes, you may have guessed it from the above photo of me that I jammed out on the tenor saxophone to the remaining crowd at 9:50 PM. I played brand new jazz fusion that I wrote and recorded at 5:00 AM that day. I just thought we should have live entertainment as well even as an online podcamp.

We would like to thank all of the great podcasters and bloggers for coming to Podcamp City Online as well as the speakers. You all made it a very fun and memorable day.

Transformation Education LLC's president, Dr. Kathy King will be a speaker at Podcamp City Online July 28 from 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM EST. The purpose of the conference is to freely educate and share information about podcasting to beginners and experts alike.

Dr. King's session will be "Podcasting on a Budget for Everyone." This includes live, interactive presentation in which she will field questions and provide illustrations of how podcasting can be done well and inexpensively with a focus on your purpose.

All sessions within the conference will be 30 to 60 minutes. Speakers will be able to navigate the internet as well as their own Powerpoint presentations in front of the live audience in our interactive audio/video voice and text chat virtual web conference room.

Participants can be involved at their own level of expertise and desire for involvement. One can go the url, log-in and choose to

Podcast for Teachers (sm) of Fordham University Unveils New Summer Learning Series for Teachers

The popular weekly professional development on demand podcast, co-produced by Mark Gura and Dr. Kathleen P. King, of Fordham University and Transformation Education LLC, has launched a special summer segment entitled "Summer PD." This segment kicked off July 16, 2007 with episode 96 of the podcast series which has reached over 3 million listeners to date.

Podcast for Teachers (sm) is hosted by Fordham University and provides educational technology professional development to educators via the podcasting format. Dr. Kathleen King and Mark Gura are both noted experts, educators and authors in the field of instructional technology.
